Great food in a beautiful location
Before we came to Sarajevo, we had heard that The Four Rooms of Mrs. Safije was the trendiest restaurant in Sarajevo and we were not disappointed!
The location is beautiful, in an old Austro-Hungarian house that has been lovingly restored. The menu is relatively small but with a good range of options, including for vegetarian diners.
For the starters, we tried a trio of veal and beef meatballs and the tuna tartare. Both were delicious - the tartare fresh and light, almost like a ceviche, while the meatballs were generously sized and rich in flavour.
For the main course, we ordered a roast cauliflower and harissa salad, and a grilled beef dish. The salad was good, although the creamy and nutty sauce was a little undermined by the number of figs in the salad. The beef was grilled to perfection, a crispy and salty crust giving way to a meltingly tender middle.
Finally, we ordered desert and were blown away. Perhaps the chef was a chocalatier in another life, because the deserts were truly outstanding. On the conventional side, we had a chocolate cake packed with a thick chocolate sauce accompanied with ice cream. Not a complicated dish, but one that came with the deliciously crumbly texture of a brownie and a tartly acidic raspberry puree.
For the more adventurous, we ordered a coconut mousse which came in the form of tree, complete with a chocolate trunk and mint candyfloss foliage - playful, tasty and completely in keeping with my theory that desert should be worth the extra calories!
A great evening and well worth trying if you're in Sarajevo!
